About the City

Gurugram, often called the Millennium City or just Gurgaon

Once a quiet village gifted to Guru Dronacharya in the Mahabharata era, Gurugram—formerly Gurgaon—has transformed into one of India’s most powerful urban engines. Its name reflects its roots (Guru-gram, or “village of the teacher”), but its skyline tells the story of an ambitious 21st-century city.

Spanning 732 sq. km, Gurugram is now home to over 2 million residents, and supports a working population of nearly 1.2 million, many employed in the tech, finance, consulting, and logistics sectors. With over 1,000 high-rise buildings, it has India’s second most vertical skyline, right after Mumbai. The city also houses more than 2500 corporate offices, including half of the Fortune 500 companies operating in India.

Yet Gurugram isn’t just a business district—it’s layered with rich heritage. From the sacred Sheetla Mata Mandir and the ancient Bisar Akhara, to age-old water bodies and surviving portions of the Aravalli ridge, Gurugram’s geography fuses the sacred with the strategic. It also includes over 50 urban villages, adding cultural texture and complexity to its urban sprawl.

In 2025, Gurugram stands at a pivotal moment: celebrated for its innovation, but challenged by infrastructure gaps and ecological strain. With green cover at just 12.9%, rapid urbanisation continues to test the city’s sustainability.

Gurugram isn’t just growing—it’s becoming a blueprint for modern India. But the question is: can each one of us make this growth more inclusive, green, and people-led?

How the City Moves

Gurugram’s transportation landscape is evolving rapidly, blending big infrastructure dreams with everyday commuter struggles. From metro expansions to clogged expressways and growing EV ambitions, the city is in motion—but not without friction.

🛤️ Metro Developments

The city’s metro network is slowly expanding. Two new lines were approved by the Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC), connecting 24+ major zones, including Old Gurugram, Sector 23, Palam Vihar, and Cyber City. The Rapid Metro extension now aims to ease congestion on Golf Course Road and Golf Course Extension Road, two of the busiest corridors. Currently, the Rapid Metro spans 11.7 km and connects directly with the Delhi Metro Yellow Line.

🚧 Roads and Traffic Challenges

While expressways like NH-48, Dwarka Expressway, and Golf Course Road offer fast movement, Gurugram continues to rank among India’s top 10 most congested cities (TomTom Traffic Index, 2025). Daily bottlenecks on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, worsened by ongoing metro construction, have led to 2+ hour traffic jams in peak hours. Over 60+ stretches across the city reported potholes and damaged surfaces in early 2025, increasing risks for both commuters and pedestrians.

⚡ Electric Vehicles (EVs)

In line with the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), Gurugram is pushing for a green mobility transition. As of mid-2025, the city has over 12,000 electric vehicles registered, including cabs, two-wheelers, and private EVs. However, with fewer than 150 public charging stations, adoption still faces infrastructure hurdles. Despite its ambitions, only 12–15% of Gurugram residents regularly use public transport. The rest rely heavily on private cars, cabs, and autos—straining both roads and air quality. As new routes rise and green vehicles enter the mix, the real challenge is not just building infrastructure, but making it work for everyone.

Gurugram is evolving from a corporate hub into a smart city prototype—one that blends technology, sustainability, and governance. While it isn’t officially listed under India’s Smart Cities Mission, the city has pioneered several smart urban initiatives through public-private partnerships and proactive local governance.

From sensor-based traffic lights to AI-enabled surveillance, Gurugram has embraced digital infrastructure as a tool to improve city life. Its Integrated Command & Control Centre (ICCC), built in 2023, now handles live traffic feeds, emergency response, waste tracking, and grievance redressal in real time. Over 500+ public locations are under intelligent CCTV surveillance, enhancing women’s safety and theft prevention.

Digital citizen engagement is also rising. The MCG grievance app processed over 28,000 complaints in 2024, with a 78% redressal rate. Smart parking systems are now active in Cyberhub, Sector 29, and HUDA City Centre, while EV charging stations have been set up in malls, metro parking lots, and RWAs.

The e-Governance Dashboard launched in 2025 now tracks water quality, air pollution, and municipal budgets, creating transparency and data-led decision making. Meanwhile, new projects like the smart drainage alert system, QR-based public toilets, and solar-powered street lighting continue to redefine what it means to be a truly intelligent city.

Gurugram might still be fixing potholes, but it’s also laying digital roads to the future—one smart intervention at a time.
